Plastic
surgery is a medical speciality, and cosmetic plastic surgery is one
of the most widely performed surgical procedures in the world. In
2012 alone, about 14.6 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures
were performed worldwide—the majority of them in North America.
While cosmetic plastic surgery is concerned with improving a person’s
appearance, non-cosmetic plastic surgery procedures—like
reconstructive surgery, craniofacial
surgery, and cleft lip and palate surgery—are also widely
performed.
Liposuction
is a process employed to remove excess body fat. While the cosmetic
applications are quite obvious, liposuction is also used to remove
benign tumors
from the skin. In addition, liposuction may be employed in tummy tuck
procedures, which aims to remove excess body fat and skin from the
person’s abdomen. While its cosmetic purposes are apparent, tummy
tucks can also be used to alleviate the side-effects of abdominal
surgeries.
Face
lifts are
primarily employed to remove wrinkles and counteract other signs of
ageing in a person’s face. However, face
lifts
can also be used to remove fatty deposits in the eyes, which would
otherwise make it difficult for the person to see. Breast
surgeries
have both utilitarian and cosmetic purposes, as they are employed to
make a woman’s breasts fuller or smaller, or can be employed to
remove tumors found in the breasts.
